Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ commented via his official Twitter account on the constitutional changes that will be put to referendum, saying that they will strengthen the current system. In tweets regarding the constitutional changes, Bozdağ said late Monday that the changes will bring about a 100 percent independent legislation. He contended that the executive will not have an influence over legislation. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ratified the constitutional reform package on Friday, paving the way for a referendum to be held on April 16.The proposed law gives executive powers to the president and vice president while abolishing the post of prime minister. It also lowers the age of candidacy for Parliament from 25 to 18 and increases the number of parliamentarians from 550 to 600 in accordance with the country's growing population.Bozdağ said that Parliament has the power to discuss and change executive decrees, and added that it will be able to take the country to parliamentary elections and presidential elections. He noted that executive decrees issued during the state of emergency must be discussed in Parliament within three months.
