Presidential system to end unstable, short-term gov'ts in Turkey

President Erdoğan underscored Wednesday that a 'yes' result in the April 16 referendum will be the beginning of a new era of a stronger Turkey as it will not face instability caused by short-term government



President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaking Wednesday at the presidential complex underlined that "a new era" is set to begin as a result of a 'yes' vote in April 16 referandum, putting an end to the short-lived coalition governments in Turkey with "strong" support from the people for the constitutional amendment. Speaking to a large crowd of attendees at the presidential complex in Ankara yesterday, the president emphasized Turkey's rocky political past, referring to failed governments in Turkish political history and stating that some of the previous Turkish governments lasted for only 25 days, adding that there could be no "stability and trust" under such governments.President Erdoğan indicated: "All of the crises, chaos and pain of the past were due to flaws in our system of governance. Who could deny or oversee such frailties? This is why we [the Justice and Development Party] want to make the stable and secure environment of the past 14 years a permanent one. Let peace, love, tranquility and brotherhood be sovereign," he added.The president asserted that regarding Turkey's political history "[The country] is done with such incidents and will enter a new political era with the strong support of the people and the authority of the [Turkish] Constitution. "Touching on claims raised by the main opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) that the "President will be able to dissolve Parliament causing it to shut down," the president once again affirmed that he "does not have the authority to dissolve Parliament," insisting that "it is not even a matter of discussion. They are all lies." Without mentioning the name of the main opposition party leader, Erdoğan said: "They have created a world of lies for themselves and they are living in it. There is no more need for me to speak about the person leading the main opposition party."On the other hand, he added that under the new system the president will be able to be put on trial for any and all criminal activity compared to current constitutional law in which the president can only be brought to trial for "acts of treason. "Through the April 16 referendum on the constitutional amendment package, Turkey's economy is expected to triple its growth in the short term and double by 2023 under the proposed system, Erdoğan affirmed. Stressing the crucial need for unity, Erdoğan emphasized that the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) will not be able to survive any more, asserting: "Turkey will exert a much more efficient counter-terrorism fight [with the new system]."
