The Republican People's Party (CHP) will concentrate its energy on lifting the state of emergency in the new parliamentary term while the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) prioritize adjustment laws.
The CHP has stressed that Parliament should, above all, work on lifting the state of emergency. CHP deputy chairman and party spokesman Bülent Tezcan said that the issue should dominate everything else in the new term.
"The priority of Parliament should be lifting the state of emergency," Tezcan said, adding that "the most important issue in the Parliament is taking a step toward normalization, which is lifting the state of emergency."
The CHP official underscored that the main opposition party will keep the matter alive in Parliament. "The state of emergency can be lifted before its extension is over. We will underline this issue during the works," he added.
As the CHP looks to bring the state of emergency to an end in the new parliamentary term, the AK Party and MHP will allocate their full energy together on making adjustment laws. The AK Party chairman, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said earlier this week that making the adjustment laws will be crucial in the upcoming term.
Speaking at the AK Party's weekly parliamentary group meeting, Erdoğan said: "One of the most important tasks in the new era will be the making of the adjustment laws."
Meanwhile, AK Party spokesman Mahir Ünal also said last week that the AK Party may propose three plans for a new electoral system as part of the adjustment laws. Citing the AK Party's three previous suggestions for a new electoral system, Ünal said that discussions on adjustment laws and the electoral system will be on Parliament's agenda.MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli recently said that the MHP can contribute to the process of making adjustment laws for the new executive presidential system approved in the April 16 referendum. Responding to a question regarding adjustment laws for the presidential system, Bahçeli reiterated that the MHP will support the AK Party in its efforts to adopt adjustment laws for the new system. "If the ruling party sends a resolution to us, we would contribute to the adoption of adjustment laws at the earliest by analyzing and working on the resolute," he said.
After the April 16 referendum opened doors to a presidential system, new adjustment laws and a new electoral system must be adopted. Parliament has recently picked up the pace on adjustment laws and parliamentary bylaws.
According to the new regulations, it has been suggested that the term "main opposition" not be used in parliamentary bylaws and other laws. Instead, the parties will be defined as "first, second and third" according to their vote shares.
Another adjustment will allow each party to nominate only one candidate for the presidency. Candidates will be permitted to campaign along with their political parties.
