Turkey: Center for higher education in the region

Turkey is a leader for higher education in the region. In the last two decades, Turkey has become famous for its universities, and has received many awards in different disciplines

We all know that success is often a result of education and every human being deserves quality education. Turkey, as a leader in the region, has a vision not only educating young Turks, but also for opening its doors to international students. Compared to European and American schools, education is also free of charge in Turkish public schools. Turkey focuses on increasing the quality and quantity of all education services, formal and informal, by having institutions in every city in Turkey.Through educational investments, many Turkish universities were listed in the world's best universities list, such as Boğazici University, Istanbul University and Middle East Technical University. While Turkish students often want to study in Europe and America, high rankings urge international students to pursue higher education at Turkish universities - not only from Asia, but also from Europe and America because students and parents, stretched by high tuition costs, are increasingly challenging the affordability of a college degree as well as the diploma's ultimate value as an employment credential. As a result, Turkey receives applications from around 150 countries, and more than 55,000 international students study in Turkey. Surprisingly, students from Israel and Armenia also apply to Turkish universities and receive higher education scholarships to do so.Why Turkey Focuses on Education?Improving individuals' quality of life by providing more higher education opportunities is one of Turkey's 2023 vision aims. Compared to high school graduates, college graduates have longer life spans, better access to health care, greater economic stability and security, more prestigious employment and greater job satisfaction.Turkey is a growing country and education is vital to sustainable growth, social development and economic security. Educated people are aware of the socio-economic situation of the country and can help in the progress of the country. Also, they often know how to contribute towards the country's well-being.Education promotes robust civic engagement, in part, by helping citizens to understand the voting process and how to participate constructively in the democratic process. Being an educated person helps in deciding why a citizen should vote for a particular party over the other. Turkey's vision focuses on nation building and education creates an enlightened society. This is a prerequisite for the nation building process because the more people become enlightened, the more they will avoid doing something that will harm society. For example, educated citizens will always tend to be responsive and responsible, obey laws and protect the country's properties. By educating people in the region, Turkey also helps other nations have better human resources, and grow socially and economically.Turkey has diverse citizens in the country and neighbors in the region. Education helps people accept differences and live together in peace and harmony. Therefore, nation building is very important because until we accept our differences and come together to build the nation, progress will never be made.A nation cannot be built without quality education. In the same way, quality education cannot be offered by undeveloped nations. Education leads to the efficient use of the nation's resources. In order to continue to build nations, we, as a leading country in the region, need educated citizens, because education shapes the attitudes, behaviors and values of citizens. These are qualities that are necessary for nation building, and it is only education that will bring those into fruition. Most importantly, Turkey has responsibility to educate tomorrow's leaders in the region in order to bring peace and prosperity.
