Istanbul celebrates the fascinating history of automobiles by the Golden Horn

Organized for the third time in Turkey, the Istanbul Concours d'Elegance will host classic automobile lovers and prominent figures of the business world at the Haliç Congress Center for two days



One of the most prestigious automobile events in the world, Concours d'Elegance, will be held in Istanbul for the third time this year, presenting a parade of classic automobiles. The Istanbul Concours d'Elegance, which is sponsored by Işıklar Holding and Julius Baer, will turn Haliç Congress Center into a gathering point for classic automobile lovers on June 13-14. The tradition of Concours d'Elegance – French for "competition of elegance" – dates back to the 17th century French aristocracy.Figures from the aristocracy paraded horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris on summer weekends and holidays before the carriages were replaced with automobiles. Since then, the prestigious event and its various editions, including Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, have been held around the world to appreciate the elegance of classical cars and specific makers.Speaking to Sabah newspaper, Uğur Işık, the president of the organization committee, said the Istanbul Concours d'Elegance held in 2013 and 2014 drew great attention from classical automobile lovers and owners."This year we believe that the interest shown in this prestigious event will increasingly continue. We will hold our organization at the Haliç Congress Center, which is one of the most exclusive exhibition venues in Istanbul, just like the previous year," Işık said.Emphasizing that the Goldern Horn will become a center of attraction for Istanbul's social and business life as well as classic automobile fans for two days, he said: "We are happy and proud that prominent international companies from the sector such as Julius Baer, IWC Schaffhausen and Numarine volunteered to be our sponsors. We will continue to organize the Istanbul Concours d'Elegance with the same passion in the following years."This year, the automobiles to be included will be chosen after an elimination process. Those that get the chance to be part of the third edition of the Istanbul Concours d'Elegance will compete in three main categories – Antiques for 1945 and earlier makes, Classics for 1946 to 1960 and Collectables for 1961 to 1975. Moreover, trophies will be presented to two participants in the Featured Brand and People's Choice categories. Also, jury members will choose the best automobile in all categories for Best in Show award.The cars will be scored based on their appearance, interior design, originality and history by a jury with Annette Abaci, Dominik Fischlin, David Cottingham, Saydun Gökşin, Ekber I. N. Onuk and Vaughn Andrako. The Istanbul Concours d'Elegance has chosen this year's featured car to be Italian automobile giant Ferrari. The owners of vintage Ferrari sports cars will compete with each other for their automobiles to be chosen as the most elegant Ferrari of the year. Furthermore, the winner of the People's Choice category where will be determined by the visitors.On June 13, the first day of the show, all classical cars will be evaluated by the jury according to their categories from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The following day, visitors will be able to see the historical automobiles up close and vote for the People's Choice category.
