The rising trend of social media has become a daily issue, yet its trends often change each day. A regular Twitter consumer checks his or her account 110 times in a day, said Colin Crowell, the head of Global Public Policy at Twitter, on Wednesday. Speaking at the VİZYONER'15 Sectors Summit organized by the Independent Industrialists and Businessmen Association (MÜSİAD), Crowell said there are 320 million active Twitter users around the world and added that people can now learn news that they previously watched on TV via Twitter. Eighty percent of users check their Twitter accounts on their smartphones. Seventy percent of Twitter users are outside of the U.S. People in many countries including Turkey actively use Twitter, Crowell said. On the other side, around 88 percent see mobile advertisements. He said Twitter is an active platform, as anything that happens in real life can be shared there.In Turkey, there are more than 11.5 million Twitter users, 5.6 million of whom are active users. A comprehensive report "Digital, Social and Mobile in 2015" by We Are Social, a London-based social media agency, examined Internet and social media use trends in 30 countries including Turkey. Based on data from the Global Web Index, the report demonstrated that Twitter is among the top four social media platforms in Turkey after Facebook, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The findings also showed that Turkey has 37.7 million active Internet users. The number of active social media accounts in Turkey from 2014 to 2015 increased 11 percent. Turkey ranks 21st in terms of Internet prevalence in the world with a 49 percent penetration rate. The top three countries are Canada, the United Arab Emirates and South Korea, respectively.Crowell said Twitter cannot be used to trigger terrorism and violence, as the company takes necessary measures against it. He stressed that Twitter opens all its communication channels to security institutions in case of an emergency. A leading global company, Twitter will undergo changes in March next year, Crowell announced, saying that its format will also be changed.
