Map made of local plants to be displayed in Aegean city

The world-renowned American paper artist Jane Ingram Allen came to Turkey as the guest of Ege University to redraw İzmir's map with local plants as part of the 6th International EgeArt Art Days.Allen is an expert on handmade paper techniques, Asian paper-making practices and environmental art installations. As part of the 6th International EgeArt Art Days, Allen offered a workshop on handmade paper at the EÜ Paper and Book Arts Museum last week. The artist is known for her maps created with paper made from plants and fashioned a map of İzmir using local plants. Allen's "The Map of İzmir" will be displayed at the EÜ Paper and Book Arts Museum until Dec. 13.EÜ Chancellor Professor Candeğer Yılmaz was pleased that İzmir is now featured among Allen's collection of maps and said the colorful maps of the artist present a different way to explore the world and foreign cultures. "As a part of the celebration for Ege University's 60th anniversary, we hosted a world-recognized artist. She had a chance to study İzmir, Turkey, our culture and our people closely," said Chancellor Yılmaz. Each handmade map Allen makes features multiple layers of plant fibers. The plant fibers mix with the natural fiber of the paper and this allows these maps to be folded just like regular maps. Allen's maps are created using different techniques and materials including acrylic paint, drawing and collages. The maps are two-sided, which allows the audience to see the map from both sides and clearly identify different neighborhoods and districts.
