Istanbul women put their foot on the pedal during bicycle days

The social responsibility project "Sarı Bisiklet" (Yellow Bicycle) is extending its target and will encourage more women to use bicycles via bicycle days in various Istanbul neighborhoods. Initiated by ETİ and the Active Life Association, the project undertakes various events to raise awareness of the use of bicycles in urban life.Istanbul's Beykoz district was chosen for a pilot scheme and women living in Beykoz neighborhoods like Çamlıbahçe will encourage more local women to use bicycles for short distances. The project also wants women to give bicycles as gifts to each other. The program covers cycling classes, safe cycling techniques and group cycling events in the month of Ramadan. Mehmet Ali Çalışkan, the head of the Active Life Association, said: "Parents are always complaining about traffic congestion and do not let their children play outside. If we allow more cycling routes for local people, then both parents and children can find a place to live relaxed. Women have the power to spread this."Aiming to reach 5 million Turkish women, the initiative wants more women to use bicycles when they bring their children to school or go to the local market. Seçil Öznur Yakan, the founding member of the program's women initiative, said: "Last year, the project started with the aim to reach more women who want to make bicycles a part of their lives. We will give great support to promote cycling culture in the city."
