10,000 refugees to learn coding
The SAP and UNHCR announced their joint initiative to organize Refugee Coding Week, whose aim is to provide coding training that will enable young refugees in Turkey and the Middle East to participate in the economy.


Enterprise software market leader SAP has announced that in cooperation with the United Nations (U.N.) Refugee Agency High Commissioner (UNCHR), refugees in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey will receive training during a "Refugee Coding Week" in October.Within the scope of the program run by the UNCHR and the global technology company, SAP, various code-writing workshops and online training courses will be offered to teach young refugees between the ages of 8 and 24 how to write software, from Oct. 15-23.SAP and the UNHCR announced their cooperation to organize Refugee Coding Week at the World Humanitarian Summit, organized for the first time by the UN on May 23-24. The aim is to provide coding training, that will enable young refugees in Turkey and the Middle East to participate in the economy.Facing the toughest refugee crisis the world has witnessed since the 1940s, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon together host around 5 million refugees. In response to a call from the UNHCR for the private sector to relieve some of the pressure on the governments hosting refugees, SAP, a market leader in enterprise application software, decided to initiate the project.Refugee Coding Week was inspired by African Coding Week, which was organized in 2015 over 10 days, during which 89,000 young people and teachers from 17 countries received training in writing software. The program, implemented in coordination with UNCHR, is one of the most crucial components of SAP's Refugee Help Program.During Coding Week, younger participants will receive training on the simplified coding platform, Scratch. Older participants will learn HTML, CSS, Java, PHP and SQL, which will enable them to create websites, and they will receive information about the corporate software of SAP Business One, and prospective computer engineers who are ready to be employed will receive further training. These participants will also get the chance to attend a 15-week coding training camp. SAP is currently training coding instructors for the program, and building a special open SAP platform for online training.The Refugee Coding Week will take place in Istanbul with help from local administrations, non-profit Organizations, NGOs, training institutions and companies, including Galway Education Centre and RebootKamp.
