The 150-year-old historic houses in the district of Akçakoca in Düzce province, one of the main tourist destinations in the western Black Sea region, will undergo restoration for local tourism. Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Akçakoca Municipality Mayor Cüneyt Yemenici expressed that he wishes to see the cultural and coastal tourism activity in the district increase, stating that government officials have visited the district to conduct studies on the historic homes which will now be restored. "We want to complete the restoration of the registered houses in one go. While we previously opened some of the homes after their restoration, there are still 150 more homes in need of restoration and renovation. Our priority is to find a way to complete this restoration project all at once," said Yemenici.The Akçakoca mayor stressed the historical significance of the buildings, assuring locals at projects related with history and tourism are ongoing. He said: "We will continue to take care of our historic houses and we will be able to complete restoration on a one-by-one basis. The academic who is in charge of restorations said that restoration work usually kicks off 10 years after registering the historical building but that the project was launched some time before. However, financial resources play an important role in our project and we are currently working to find more resources. I hope that we will continue our work and rediscover Akçakoca's historical nature once again."Yemenici also stated that one of the restored homes will operate as the Office of the Düzce Governor, while another will serve as the Düzce Municipality building."We will introduce these historical homes to the tourism market – whether with the help of the state or the private sector. God willing, the historical houses in Akçakoca will be internationally recognized as the Beypazarı and Hamamönü houses are in the future," he said.
