Turkey's child population has declined in recent years and recent statistics show that two cities, Edirne and Kırklareli, in the country's far west has the least amount of children in the country. According to 2015 statistics from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the child population in Turkey is around 23 million, 29 percent of the total population.On the other side of the country, two southeastern cities, Şanlıurfa and Şırnak stand out as having the highest number of children with 47.4 percent and 41.1 percent of the local population, respectively. These two cities are followed by Ağrı at 45 percent. Ali İhsan Yücedağ of Turkstat said that Tunceli is a city with few children. In previous years, the southeastern cities had the highest child population.Urbanization, the rising educational attainment of women and the increased participation of women in working life have led to a reduction in fertility, postponement of births and decrease in overall fertility rates in Turkey.
