Street cat saved by Turkish soldier in al-Bab awaits new home in Turkey

A fluffy cat named "Barış" (Peace) has been saved from al-Bab, the north Syrian town liberated from Daesh terrorists by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) backed by the Turkish military.Ömer Özkan, a Turkish specialist sergeant in Operation Euphrates Shield, found the tired cat in al-Bab a few days ago. Özkan fed the cat and gave it a name but was unable to look after it for long time as he is active in a conflict zone.Asking the help of volunteers through social media, a local animal association in southeastern Gaziantep province answered his request. Staff from the Gaziantep Association for Improving Animals' Life (CAHİDER) took the cat from the Turkish-Syrian border. The cat was immediately taken under treatment and is now waiting for a new home in Turkey.Cengiz Bayram, the chairman of CAHİDER, said that Turkish soldiers are saving people's lives there but they are also looking after street animals stuck in the middle of a conflict. "It is very difficult to provide the necessary treatment and care to street cats and dogs there. This is why we offered a helping hand to them," he continued. Bayram said that they took the cat from another Turkish soldier as Özkan was unable to move from this position in al-Bab. "Barış is our guest here. The cat is very friendly and peaceful," Bayram said.Turkey launched Operation Euphrates Shield last year in August, declaring that it was exercising its right to self-defense codified under the U.N. Charter Article 51. Operation Euphrates Shield aims to provide security, support the U.S.-led coalition forces and eliminate the terrorist presence along Syria's northern border with Turkey.
