Affiliated with Çukurova University, Ali Nihat Gökyiğit Botanical Garden in southern Turkey's Adana, offers elementary students with an opportunity to put what they have learned at school into practice in small gardens.The children can grow different vegetables including, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries and parsley here, as they learn about farming and spend time in nature.The manager of the botanical gardens, Professor Halil Çakan, talking to Anadolu Agency (AA) said, modern day children grow up in an environment, surrounded by concrete buildings and do not have a chance to enjoy nature. With their initiative, they aim to show people how Mother Nature works and how they can always retreat to nature.Professor Çakan said that the new generations have little idea about how fruits and vegetables are grown."Unfortunately, most children have little to no idea of how fruits and vegetables they eat, come to their table. We want to show them how Mother Nature works.""Each child works in a 3-square-meter garden and they are responsible for the fruits and vegetables they plant in their piece of land. They come here and take care of their plants. We want to teach them how nature is feeding the humanity," he said.The project is called "The Children's Festival of Children Meeting Nature."It organizes various events to teach children why they should respect nature."Civilizations in history that did not respect nature, perished. These children will be the decision-makers in the future. If they learn to respect nature, one day, mankind and nature might reconcile," Çakan said.
