Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz escapee dies at age 98

Kazimierz Piechowski, a man known for his spectacular escape from the Auschwitz Nazi death camp, has died.

Piechowski passed away on Friday at the age of 98 in the port city of Gdansk, Polish news agency PAP reported, citing the Institute of National Remembrance.

In June 1940, Piechowski and other Polish political prisoners were taken by convoy to the Auschwitz concentration camp in occupied Poland.

Two years later, he and two fellow prisoners managed their escape by stealing weapons, uniforms and a vehicle belonging to their SS guards.

After securing freedom, he fought with the Home Army, the dominant Polish resistance movement, against the Nazis. Piechowski was apprehended after the war by local communist authorities and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
