Turks prefer sleep lying on their side, new study shows

Rolling around the bed is not something that Turks do, according to new research. "Most Turks sleep lying on their side," said Sleep Science Foundation member Professor Hikmet Yılmaz said. According to the data, half of the Turkish population sleep better lying on their sides and the average Turk sleeps 7.5 hours a day.

"The world average for sleep duration is between 7 and 7.5 hours. Italians, the Spanish and the Greek are the people that love sleeping the most," said Professor Yılmaz.

Although Turks sleep above the world average, sleep apnea is one of their common sleep disorders, along with difficulties in falling asleep, frequent wake-ups during the night and insufficient sleep duration.

Official data from the Sleep Association (UYKUDER) shows that 1.5 million people suffer from sleep apnea in Turkey.

Just over 11 percent of men are at risk from sleep apnea, while this rate is 20.2 percent in women, according to research from the Turkish Sleep Science Society. Snoring, erratic breathing during sleep and tiredness after a long sleep are some of the symptoms of sleep disorders.
