Arab lawmaker Zoabi barred from Knesset run

For a second time, the Israeli election committee disqualified Arab-Israeli lawmaker Hanin Zoabi from the upcoming general election, raising questions over free speech in the Israeli parliament

Israeli-Arab law maker, Hanin Zoabi, known for her abrasive style in the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, has been barred from running in the general elections, which will take place on March 17. Her disqualification from elections was approved by Israel's election committee by a vote of 27 to six on Thursday. The committee was formed by the right-wing hawkish Likud party chaired by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right Israel Beitenou party. The two political parties have long reproached the Arab member of Knesset, with Zoabi criticizing the Israeli war over the occupation of Palestinian territories. The decision will go to the Supreme Court as it did when it happened previously in 2012. Therefore, it is more likely that the decision will be overturned by the High Court of Justice in Jerusalem on the grounds of free speech.Zoabi said she wasn't surprised by the vote while calling the decision "unjust" and "racist." "Those responsible for killing civilians in Gaza are the ones who should stand here, not me," Zoabi said speaking before the election committee. "I stand here against the [Israeli] occupation and siege of the Palestinians," she added. This is not the first time Zoabi has faced disqualification from parliament. Before the Jan. 22 parliamentary election in 2012, Zoabi was barred from running. However, the panel of nine judges from the high court unanimously rejected the argument that there were grounds to disqualify her. Zoabi also participated in a pro-Palestinian flotilla that tried to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza in 2010 where nine activists were killed during clashes with Israeli soldiers. She was on board the Turkish Mavi Marmara passenger ship that was overpowered by Israeli naval commandos.Being member of the Knesset since 2009, Hanin Zoabi, from the Arab town of Nazareth in northern Israel angered mainstream Israelis and was slammed by right-wing Israelis as a "traitor" because of her anti-Israeli campaign in Gaza. Zoabi, member of the Israeli-Arab Balad party, is in seventh position in the list presenting the four principal Arab-Israeli parties. She has rejected the idea of Israel as a Jewish state that legalizes discrimination against Palestinians, triggers more unrest while calling for equal rights for both Jews and Arabs. The "Jewish State Bill" law received severe criticism from members of the Israeli parliament, mostly coming from the center and the left as they fear that the law would only "institutionalize discrimination" against Palestinians.Along with Zoabi, an Israeli activist, Baruch Marzel was also banned from running in the upcoming election on grounds of incitement. The decision over his disqualification squeaked by with a 17 to 16 majority. The past attempts of the Committee to block Marzel have failed.
