Egypt jails policeman for 15 years over death of female protester

An Egyptian court jailed a policeman for 15 years Thursday for the fatal shooting of a woman protester during a peaceful leftist rally, a court official said. Shaima al-Sabbagh, 34, the mother of a five-year-old, was struck by birdshot in January as police dispersed a small march on the fourth anniversary of the uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak. The trial was the first time a policeman was charged over the violent death of a protester since then army chief and now President, Abdel Fattah el-Sissi ousted the first democratically elected former president Mohammed Morsi in 2013. The policeman, who was not named, can appeal the verdict.
