A UN conference gets under way in Bonn, Germany, on Sunday to pick new World Heritage Sites, as well as discuss the potential destruction of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, which was taken over by terrorists from the self-proclaimed Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).Germany, which is holding the conference for the second time since 1995, currently has 39 World Heritage Sites, including Berlin's Museum Island, the cathedrals in Cologne and Aachen and five beech forests in the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Thuringia and Hesse.The cultural sites to be considered for nomination during the 10-day conference include Susa in Iran, Ephesus in Turkey and sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.Also to be debated are the nominations of the Viking Age sites in Northern Europe - Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, as well as the Naumburg Cathedral in Germany.
