Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi said on Sunday that Britain's decision to leave the European Union will have a negative effect on the peace process in the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the Norwegian envoy for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, Arabi said there is a need for an international entity to get over obstacles in the Middle East peace process. "Unfortunately, Britain's decision to leave the EU will make this process harder," he said.

Arabi also emphasized that negotiations between Palestine and Israel need to be under the observation of an organization such as the U.N. Security Council and said if there is not any international observation, then negotiations may take a very long time, Anadolu Agency reported.

Since the early 1990s, numerous peace talks have failed to resolve the differences between Israel and Palestine. The most problematic of these include the status of Jerusalem, Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and Palestinian statehood.
