Leaked footage shows Egyptian soldiers carrying out extrajudicial killings

A video emerged on Thursday purportedly showing Egyptian soldiers carrying out extrajudicial killings in the northern Sinai region and staging the killings to look like the detainees were killed during a gun battle.

The yet-to-be-verified footage posted by the Istanbul-based Mekameleen satellite channel shows two blindfolded and unarmed men being shot in the head and soldiers placing weapons beside the bodies. The soldiers that appeared in the video are seen wearing Egyptian military uniforms.

Another man, also blindfolded and unarmed, had been interrogated about his family before he was shot in the head, the video showed.

A pro-government news website claimed that the video was fabricated, however, the military did not make a statement regarding the leak.

The military claims to kill hundreds of militants in Sinai each year, although it rarely offers proof, and journalists and non-residents are banned from the area. Hundreds of security forces have been killed in clashes with militants in the region throughout the year.

Since toppling elected President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in mid-2013, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's government has cracked down on the opposition, killing hundreds of Brotherhood supporters and jailing thousands. The net has widened to include liberal and secular activists.
