Salihi urges KRG grant political rights to Turkmens

Ershad Salihi, leader of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, urged the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to give political and cultural rights to the Turkmens living in Irbil on Tuesday.

A meeting was held in Iraqi capital Baghdad to discuss the future of Iraq's Turkmen community in the post-Daesh era.

"[We want] a quota for Turkmen students in military schools and the police academy, and forming a Turkmen force to protect their territories," Salihi said, going on to call on the government to help displaced Iraqis to return to their homes.

He also called for dialogue between the central government and the KRG and NGOs with a view to solving their disputes regarding the northern city of Kirkuk.

He stressed that the Iraqi parliament "would never let Iraq fall apart."

Meanwhile, Iraqi forces have recaptured nearly 90 percent of west Mosul from Daesh and other terrorists in the city are on the "brink of total defeat," military spokesmen said Tuesday.
