Activists called on the world to observe a one-day hunger strike May 25 in a show of support for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

CAPJPO-EuroPalestine, a French non-governmental organization dedicated to ending Israel's occupation of Palestine initiated the global call.

"Given the critical situation of the Palestinian prisoners and the Israeli refusal to take their just demands into account, an appeal is made to all people of conscience in the world to mobilize in the streets on Thursday, 25 May, by observing a hunger strike to show their solidarity with the heroic resistance of the Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike since 17 April," the CAPJPO-EuroPalestine's statement said.

A number of cities across the world have already confirmed their participation in the collective hunger strike, including Berlin, London, Paris, Sydney, Dublin, Lyon, Brussels and Washington, D.C.

Nearly 1,700 prisoners have been on a hunger strike since April 17, known as Palestinian Prisoners' Day.

Led by jailed resistance icon Marwan Barghouti, those on strike demand more humane treatment and better conditions in prison facilities including more frequent family visits, improved medical care, and an end to solitary confinement and administrative detention practices, however Israeli authorities have thus far refused to negotiate.
