An Israeli settler ran over and killed an 8-year-old Palestinian girl Saturday near the Hamra Junction on Route 90 in the occupied West Bank's Nablus district.

The child, later identified as Asil Tariq Abu Oun by Palestinian medical sources, was taken to a hospital, but died en route to the medical facility.

Asil's funeral was held on Sunday.

Israel's Haaretz reported that Israeli police detained the driver and opened an investigation to the incident, however, the victim's family is doubtful whether the legal process will produce any substantial outcome.

Tareq Abu Oun, the girl's father, told Al Jazeera that the driver attempted to flee the scene after hitting the girl but that he managed to stop the car with the help of bystanders.

"The settler was armed, and they took his weapon from him until the Israeli police arrived," the father said.

According to the law, Israeli settlers are permitted to carry weapons, while Palestinians are banned from being armed in the occupied West Bank.
