Israeli justice minister: Independent Kurdistan would benefit Israel

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, who has previously voiced support for the creation of a new independent Kurdish State, announced that backing an independent Kurdistan would be beneficial for Israel.

According to report of Israeli daily Haaretz, Shaked said, "Israel as well as western states will have great benefits from the creation of a Kurdish state."

Shaked added that the U.S. should also support the independence referendum, which is slated to be held on September 25 by the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also expressed support for an independent Kurdish state in previous years, saying that Kurds should have their own independent country.

The U.S., Turkey, Iran and Russia are among countries that have opposed the referendum, believing that an independent state might bring destabilization to the region.

Shaked gained an international reputation for her controversial remarks against Palestinians.
