Sam Smith, Beck and others win at Grammy Awards


Newcomer Sam Smith and veteran musician Beck were the big winners of the 57th Grammy Awards Sunday night as artists gathered to celebrate last year's musical accomplishments.Smith swept four major awards including best new artist, song of the year, record of the year and pop vocal album.Accepting one of the awards for his hit "Stay with Me," which took global charts by storm last year, the British singer said that his career began to take off once he wasn't afraid to accept who he was."It was only when I started to be myself that the music started coming and people started to listen," Smith said.Smith sang a rendering of Stay with Me with nine-time Grammy winning singer Mary J Blige accompanied by a symphonic orchestra.Smith, who was nominated in five categories, beat out artists such as Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Taylor Swift and Sia.Veteran musician Beck won album of the year and best rock album for Morning Phase."We made this record at my house for the most part so I'd like to thank my kids for letting me keep them away a little but extra longer," Beck said.The singer seemed surprised to win best album beating out favourites such as Beyonce, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams.Australian hard rock band AC/DC opened this year's award show with a performance of Highway to Hell.Other highlights of the night included counterculture icon Lady Gaga taking the stage with 1950s crooner Tony Bennett and Pharrell performing a new rendering of the hit Happy with pianist Lang Lang.Pharrell's hit song also took the Grammy for best pop solo performance.Bee Gees founding member Barry Gibb received a lifetime achievement award on behalf of the trio made up of him and his brothers, Maurice and Robin Gibb, who passed away in 2003 and 2012 respectively.US President Barack Obama urged stars to stand up against violence against women in a video message screened at the show.
