Putin, Obama invited to Erdoğan’s presidential inauguration


Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama had been invited to the inauguration of President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.Obama recently congratulated Erdoğan on his election as the 12th President of Turkey, praising Erdoğan's balcony speech on the election night, and noting that Erdoğan has a historic opportunity to propel Turkey forward.The White House said that President Obama and Prime Minister Erdoğan agreed on the importance of close cooperation on Syria and Iraq as well as the terrorist threat "emanating" from the region. Obama welcomed Turkey's humanitarian aid to vulnerable Syrians and Iraqis, and agreed with Erdoğan on the need to ensure that cooperation continues. Leaders also discussed cease-fire efforts in Gaza.The two leaders will have the chance to discuss the bilateral issues when they meet on three different occasions in the next two months. They will first meet at the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Newport, Wales on Sept. 5, then at the U.N.
