Two Turkish MPs attend EU Parliament’s LGBTI rights seminar in Tiran


AK Party's Sivas Deputy, Mesude Nursuna Memecan, and CHP's Istanbul Deputy, Binnaz Toprak, attended the EU Parliament's LGBTI rights seminar held in Albanian capital Tiran on Friday.The seminar was focused on fundamental rights, preventing discrimination and protecting fragile groups including LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex).AK Party Deputy Memecan gave an interview to an Anadolu Agency correspondent and said that the seminar sought to seek solutions for the people who are subject to discrimination. Memecan stated that numerous steps have been taken to prevent discrimination in Turkey.CHP Deputy Toprak said that fragile groups' rights, especially LGBTI, are not protected in Turkey, and two parliamentary inquiries regarding this issue were unfruitful.EU Parliament's Deputy Chairman, Ulrike Lunacek, Albanian Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta, Albanian Deputy PM Niko Peleshi and various deputies and academicians from the Balkan region were among the participants of the seminar.Albanian Parliament Speaker Meta expressed his gratitude that a seminar on such a sensitive issue was being held in Albania and said that his country has made important efforts regarding the integration of these groups.EU Parliament's Deputy Chairman Ulrike Lunacek highlighted the discriminative attitude in the region against fragile groups.
