Şişli mayor’s wife claims Sarıgül threatened her family

The Şişli municipality is accepted as the fortress of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) in Istanbul. Nazlı İnönü, the wife of Şişli Mayor Hayri İnönü, in an interview with Turkish daily Hürriyet, said that her family received a death threat by the former Şişli Mayor Mustafa Sarıgül, over the alleged administration conflict between İnönü and Sarıgül's son, Emir Sarıgül, who was appointed vice mayor after the March 30 local elections. The Şişli municipality also recently witnessed an administration debate. It was reported that İnönü, the grandson of Turkey's second president, İsmet İnönü, was forced to resign by Emir Sarıgül.Mustafa Sarıgül had been Şişli mayor for a long time and had dominating power in the Şişli mayoral administration. Having left the CHP about 10 years ago and transferring to the Democratic Left Party (DSP) due to internal rivalry in the CHP, he returned to the CHP and announced his candidacy for the CHP's Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality race in the March 30 local elections. He did not manage to get elected, but the CHP received most of Şişli residents' votes and İnönü was elected mayor of Şişli. Following the election, Sarıgül was appointed deputy mayor. When İnönü allegedly removed some of Emir Sarıgül's authorities, the Sarıgül family started to threaten İnönü and his family. In the interview, Nazlı İnönü claimed: "My husband [Hayri İnönü] made some changes in the municipality last month. He [Mustafa Sarıgül] threatened [us] and said to our sons [who live in the U.S.] that he hired a mafia hit man by paying $750,000 in New York."She also claimed that Sarıgül threatened to kidnap her and said that both Mustafa and Emir Sarıgül continuously called to threaten her and she was about to file a complaint against the Sarıgül family, but her husband prevented it from happening. When asked the reason behind the change in appointments in Şişli, she said her husband removed some duties from Emir Sarıgül and changed the duties of 10 to 12 managers under his authority as mayor. She continued by claiming that later the same day, Mustafa Sarıgül held a meeting with İnönü at CHP headquarters in Ankara and threatened him saying: "You cannot destroy my 40-year political career. You will pay the price with your life."Responding to the allegations, Mustafa Sarıgül said that they are not correct and are all fictional.Stepping into the heated debate in Şişli, CHP İstanbul Deputy İhsan Özkes, who was appointed as a mediator to solve the issue in the municipality, said that he asked İnönü whether Sarıgül threatened him, but İnönü responded two times saying, "No."
