The Foreign Ministry recently announced that the seventh annual ambassadors' conference with the theme, "New Turkey: Sustainability and Alteration in Foreign Policy," will be held Jan. 5-9 in Ankara and Çanakkale under the chairmanship of Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. All Turkish ambassadors serving abroad participate in the annual conference and discuss various topics related to Turkish foreign policy. The conference will begin on Monday Jan. 5, 2015, with a visit to Anıtkabir – Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Mausoleum – and then a visit to the Foreign Ministry cemetery, which is designated for those who served at the ministry and lost their lives – mostly during the 1980s due to the group the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA). ASALA was an armed Armenian militant organization that aimed to reestablish the historical Armenia, which includes eastern Turkey. Following the visits, an official opening ceremony will be held, and Çavuşoğlu will deliver the inaugural speech, addressing a large number of invitees. According to an official statement by the ministry, deputy prime ministers, numerous ministers and senior representatives of the government will attend the conference in which recent regional and international conflicts that effect Turkish foreign policy will be discussed. Turkish ambassadors who serve abroad will also meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Parliament speaker Cemil Çiçek. Similar to previous years, foreign dignitaries, such as Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders, Argentinian Foreign Minister Hector Timerman, Nigerian Foreign Minister Aminu Bashir Wali, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres will be attending.The first annual ambassadors conference was held in 2008 and has become a tradition of great importance for evaluating international developments and Turkish foreign policy, determining strategies for the future and strengthening coordination with other institutions and organizations that play a role in the implementation of Turkish foreign policy.
