Government to provide researchers online access to archives since 1919

The Foreign Ministry is to allow professionals to have online access to archives from 1919 onward from January 14. The ministry, in efforts to keep pace with the latest technologies, describes the digitalization of Turkey's archives as an exceptional and innovative project. The ease of access to government archives will be increased with the Foreign Ministry's latest innovation, the e-archives. The e-archives will provide access to archives starting from 1919 and will be opened to professionals through a private password. Speaking to Daily Sabah, Naci Koru, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs said, "Under the e-archives projects, around 60 million documents will be scanned, classified and indexed and finally, a large part of them will be ready for researchers' studies." Additionally, the system is designed in such a way that researchers and professionals will be able to search a keyword in the system and will have access to all relevant documents. The archives include Turkey's diplomatic relations with other countries all over the world and consist of around 60 million documents from 1919 until 2008. According to the Foreign Ministry, 250,000 documents have already been processed as of now and over 200 experts have been assigned for the project to succeed and maintain regular contact with scholarly circles. More than 50 percent of the documents are not classified and the other remaining classified documents are expected to be declassified. Furthermore, until now the ministry has completed the publishing process of diplomatic documents between Turkey and Latin America and the Middle East from 1919 until 1958 and continues to process all other documents. The importance of these documents is highly significant for both Turkish researchers and foreign professionals to publish well-examined and accurate historical work.
