Sensitivity for Ukraine not shown for Syria, stresses Erdoğan

As the civil war in Ukraine has left several thousand people dead, the U.S., U.K., France and Germany continuously hold meetings and make visits in an effort to bring a solution to Ukraine, a sensitivity that is not shown for Syria where 350,000 people have been killed, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said. Erdoğan arrived in Istanbul on Saturday after completing official talks during his five-day visit to Latin American countries. Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş and other senior officials welcomed Erdoğan and his delegation. While returning to Turkey, Erdoğan spoke to journalists on his presidential plane, questioning world powers' inactivity and silence on Syria and their intention of continuing the process with Syrian President Bashar Assad in power."Aren't we going to say anything? We expect [the West's] sensitivity on Ukraine to be shown for Syria and Egypt. A coup took place in Egypt, and these countries supported the coup plotters," Erdoğan said, criticizing the world's silence on war-torn Syria.U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday condemned the "brutal and outrageous" execution-style murders of three Muslim students in North Carolina at the hands of a neighbor who espoused anti-religious views. Obama's statement came just a day after Erdoğan urged him to take a firm stand against the killing of the Muslims. "Why are you still keeping silent?" Erdoğan asked, stressing that he has been waiting to hear from Obama on the incident, which he called an "act of cruelty." When asked about his words for Obama, Erdoğan said it is for people to judge whether his words were "harsh or mild" and added that if an incident happens in any country, "obviously" the president of that country will be the first to address his words. "For instance, if these murders took place in our country, we would not keep silent for days. When the U.S. embassy in Ankara was bombed, we did our part and shared all the information, including that on the DHKP/C [Revolutionary People's Liberation Party–Front] with the U.S. This is what strategic partnership requires, and we expect the same from them," he said.On Sunday, Erdoğan departed from Istanbul for Colombia, Cuba and Mexico, the first visit by a Turkish president to these countries. This is the second visit of a high-level Turkish delegation to Latin America, with the first in 1995. Erdoğan's talks during his visits focused on regional and international development, bilateral relations and signing cooperation agreements in different fields.Three young Muslims from the same family, a married couple and the woman's sister, were shot dead on Wednesday in a residential complex at North Carolina State University in the U.S. Police named the victims as 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19.Erdoğan cursed the suspect, 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks, who was charged with three counts of first-degree murder. "An international fight against terrorism is a must," Erdoğan stressed. "Both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia are crimes against humanity."Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, in an exclusive interview with state-run channel TRT Haber, also commented on the murders and touched on the increasing violent acts being carried out against Muslims in the EU and U.S. "We hope there is no racist act behind these murders. But it is too early to say. When it is clarified, all administrations in the EU and the U.S. will be able to show a common attitude," Davutoğlu said, adding they will also be able to unite against all racist acts, including Islamophobia. Saying that there is a huge increase in violence against Muslims in some countries, including the U.S. and EU countries, he said that to accuse all Muslims collectively for terrorist acts perpetrated by certain terrorist groups is direct racism. "ISIS [the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham], is a terrorist organization; you can define it, you can limit it or react against it. But what kind of precautions are we able to take against racist moves that have an ISIS mentality in the EU and U.S.?" he asked.
