Security meeting discusses Gülenist structure


The First National Security Council meeting of 2015 was held under the chairmanship of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Presidential Palace on Thursday. In the six-and-half-a-hour meeting the members of the council were informed about the current situation in the fight against the Gülen Movement-led structure in the state. Work carried out at both the national and international level in the fight against the "parallel structure" and illegal mechanisms that operate under the mask of a legal framework were discussed in the National Security Council's meeting. Steps taken in the process of combatting the movement were revised,with the significance of continuity being underlined. Operation Shah Euphrates constituted an important place in the meeting's agenda. The strategy of the military operation was discussed as well as the national and international repercussions. The framework of the compromise made with the U.S. and its allies to train and equip Syrian rebels, which is expected to begin in the coming weeks, was also touched upon. Additionally, Nevruz, which will be celebrated next month, and the PKK's disarmament issues were discussed by Interior Minister Efkan Ala as part of the domestic security reform bill that is being debated in Parliament. The deadly attack in Afghanistan that took place on Thursday and the current situation of the Turkish military were other issues discussed in the meeting. It is believed that continuous support for Afghanistan was underlined in the meeting. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız made a presentation on the Turkish Stream project, which aims to transmit Russian natural gas to Europe through Turkey. The project is expected to supply 63 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Europe. The project is seen as Russia's only choice after the cancellation of the South Stream project.The $40 billion Sinop and Akkuyu Nuclear Plant projects and the $10 billion Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) Natural Gas Pipeline, within the context of energy diplomacy, were other issues that Yıldız touched upon during the presentation. This summit was also the last one for AlA and Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ, who will hand over their posts due to the June 7 parliamentary elections. According to the 114th Article of the Constitution it is stated that "[t]he Ministers of Justice, Internal Affairs and Transportation shall resign prior to general elections to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey." Therefore, Ala and Bozdağ must leave their offices on March 7.
