President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Sunday stated that he will not ask the AK Party to form the government until the election of the parliamentary speaker, amid speculation that he would go against the custom and assign the government following the oath-taking ceremony at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM)."I do not have such a thought before the election of the Parliament Speaker," Erdogan told the reporters Saturday after meeting U.N. refugee agency chief Antonio Guterres and agency's goodwill ambassador, Hollywood star Angelina Jolie in Turkey's southeastern province of Mardin.In line with Turkey's Constitution, the general assembly is expected to convene on June 23 for the oath-taking ceremony of deputies. Some Turkish media outlets claimed that President Erdoğan would go against the norm and ask Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to form the next government, since it received the most amount of the votes. According to official election results, the AK Party has 258 seats in the parliament, while the Republican People's Party (CHP) has 132, followed by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), each with 80 seats.In his first speech after the elections, Turkish President Erdoğan urged the four political parties to form a new government as soon as possible, saying that those leaving Turkey without a government will not be able to pay for the consequences.Although the AK Party won the elections, receiving roughly 41 percent of the votes, the support it gained from voters was not sufficient for the party to reach a majority needed to form the government on its own. This has led the party to look for a coalition partner.
