The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP)'s leader Devlet Bahçeli reportedly said on Tuesday that if the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voted for the Republican People's Party (CHP) parliamentary speaker candidate Deniz Baykal in the third and fourth round of the election, then MHP would not give support to the CHP candidate. Four candidates are running to be Turkey's parliament speaker, with the first and second rounds of the election taking place on Tuesday. But, with none of the candidates receiving the required number of 367 votes, the election will continue on Wednesday with the third and fourth rounds. İsmet Yılmaz, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party)'s candidate, won the first and the second rounds receiving 256 votes. Deniz Baykal, the current acting-speaker of the Parliament and also the Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate, placed second with 125 votes in the first round, whereas he received 128 votes in the second round. But, if the HDP and MHP would support Deniz Baykal in the upcoming third and fourth rounds on Wednesday with their total of 160 deputies, then there would arise a chance that Baykal would get above the threshold of 276 (for the third round) to be elected as the parliamentary speaker. Bahçeli's recent statement, however, suggests that such an option is for now out of the picture, therefore suggesting that AK Party's candidate will win the fourth round, by receiving the most of the votes, putting an end to the election process.The right-wing MHP's strongly nationalist ideology clashes with those of the pro-Kurdish HDP.
