Former President Abdullah Gül on Friday said that Turkey needs a strong government in such a critical period when it is attacked by terrorist organizations such as the PKK and ISIS. Gül spoke to journalists following the Friday prayers in Istanbul's Fatih district and said that he has always suggested the formation of a powerful government. "I think that Turkey's priority should be to establish a strong government and have a firm stance" Gül said, who served as the 11th President of the Republic of Turkey. He noted that this was crucial as Turkey was surrounded by "fire" and threats in the region. In response to a question about whether a strong government would mean a minority government or a coalition, Gül suggested a "German model." "I am of the opinion that a strong government in Turkey would be formed by the parties which have obtained the most votes in the elections" he said, adding that this would be the most appropriate choice for the current situation. The former president also stated that Turkey should not give opportunity to terrorism, which he said was one of the most important elements in the fight against terrorism. Turkey's military and police have been hit by a number of attacks over the past week following the ISIS-linked suicide bombing in southern border Şanlıurfa province that killed 32 people on July 20.Following the PKK killings, Ankara has intensified its counterterror operations. Having conducted many airstrikes against ISIS and the PKK within the country as well as in Syria and Iraq, Turkey is fighting against both terror organizations effectively.Turkish security forces have arrested hundreds of people with suspected links to ISIS, the PKK, and far-left groups, detaining over 1,300 people across the country, according to a statement on Wednesday from the Prime Minister's Office.Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has reiterated once again on Friday that Turkey will continue to fight terrorists who attack Turkish sovereignty and will not agree to a ceasefire if the people in Turkey are killed and public order is threatened. The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., E.U. and Turkey and many countries including the U.S. have condemned PKK's terrorist attacks and have recognized Turkey's right to self-defense.
