CHP deputy chairman requests support for HDP
Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Mehmet Bekaroğlu said on his personal Twitter account Wednesday that everyone must give a chance to the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the upcoming early elections on Nov. 1. Underlining the significance of the pro-Kurdish HDP, Bekaroğlu also said the HDP's existence in Parliament holds vital importance. Bekaroğlu's tweet brings to mind when CHP Deputy Chairman Murat Özçelik said he voted for the HDP in the June 7 elections.
Bekaroğlu said on his social media account that the PKK terrorist organization has sabotaged the HDP's position in Parliament. He urged people to support the HDP by giving it one more chance and protect Parliament. According to CHP sources, some members of the party assembly claimed that 4 percent of CHP supporters voted for the HDP due to their election promises as well as strategic voting to ensure the HDP passed the 10 percent election threshold. In this regard, the party assembly meeting on Aug. 23 witnessed a brawl between former Kahramanmaraş Deputy Durdu Özbolat and Özçelik after he said he and the people around him had voted for the HDP in the June 7 elections. Özbolat said it was unacceptable to have a person who did not vote for the CHP as vice chairman.
Following the June 7 election results in which the HDP won 13.12 percent of the vote, HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş emphasized that he is aware that the party received custodial votes in the elections in order to pass the 10 percent election threshold. However, after the increased PKK terror activities, recently conducted surveys have all revealed a drop in HDP support.
