CHP İzmir head: Our supporters in İzmir regret voting for HDP

Having voted for the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the June 7 general elections in an attempt to push the pro-Kurdish party into Parliament, some Republican People's Party (CHP) supporters regret their decision since they now say they realize who the HDP serves, according to CHP İzmir provincial head Bedri Sertel.

When asked about whether CHP supporters who voted for the HDP to prevent the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) from acquiring a majority in Parliament will vote for the HDP again, Sertel claimed the supporters realized the truth about the HDP following terror incidents.

Sertel also claimed that supporters are going to revert to the CHP in the upcoming Nov. 1 snap elections, saying: "All those votes will return to the CHP." Sertel furthered his argument regarding CHP supporters: "They realized where their votes are going and who they serve."

According to reports after the June 7 elections from inside sources with the CHP to evaluate the election results, 4 percent of CHP supporters across the country voted for the HDP. Should Sertel's hope for the upcoming elections becomes reality the CHP's representation in Parliament is likely to increase.

Even though Sertel wants the votes to return the CHP, CHP Vice Chairman Mehmet Bekaroğlu on Sept. 2 supported the HDP on his official Twitter account, calling on the people to give the pro-Kurdish party one more chance in the Nov. 1 elections.

Arguing that the PKK terrorist organization damaged the HDP's image, Bekaroğlu urged people to support the HDP by giving it one more chance and protect Parliament. Previously, the party assembly meeting on Aug. 23 witnessed a brawl between former Kahramanmaraş deputy Durdu Özbolat and Vice Chairman Murat Özçelik after he said he and the people around him had voted for the HDP in the June 7 elections. Özbolat said it was unacceptable to have a person who did not vote for the CHP as vice chairman.
