Gülenist channels removed from Turkcell TV+

Following an order from the Ankara Public Prosecutor's office, TV channels linked with the Gülen Movement were removed from the channel list of Turkcell TV+, a service provided by one of Turkey's leading cellphone operators, Turkcell, and a widely known Internet provider, Superonline.

After Tivibu, a service provided by Türk Telekom that enables people to watch high quality TV over the Internet, opted to remove Gülenist TV channels from its channel list, Turkcell's Superonline partnership also cut Bugün TV, STV, Samanyolu Haber, Mehtap TV and Kanaltürk. The channels allegedly "aid and abet" the Gülen Movement, which has been accused of being a terrorist organization after trying to topple the government.

It still remains a question whether other TV service providers such as Digiturk, Türksat and D-Smart will also act in accordance with the request to remove the aforementioned channels.

The Gülen Movement is a transnational organization led by the U.S.-based fugitive imam Fethullah Gülen. The movement is accused of wiretapping thousands of peoples' phones and infiltrating state institutions to overthrow the government and gain ultimate power in the country. In light of recent indictments, a life sentence is now being sought for Gülen along with dozens of other suspects accused of plotting a coup to overthrow the government.
