UN's Ban: UN Security Council needs reform
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Sunday that the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) needs structural reform urgently, stressing that there should be compromise on reforming the council in be more democratic, transparent, accountable and representative.Holding a press conference at the G20 summit in Antalya, Ban said: "It seems to me that there is almost a unanimous view that the Security Council should be reformed in a more democratic, more transparent, more accountable and more representative. For that point, I think there are no different views," adding that there are, however, a number of different views from many countries.
The current structure of the UNSC has long been criticized by some world leaders, stressing that the future of the world cannot depend on five states alone, referring to the veto power of the five permanent member states of the UNSC. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized the UNSC at an annual summit in February, saying that the current structure of the organization is an obstacle to resolving ongoing problems around the world with his mantra: "The world is bigger than five."
Ban condemned the latest series of terror attacks in Paris that killed more than 130 people and conveyed his condolences to the French people and families of the victims.
He said: "Terrorists continue to commit atrocious acts across the world. Their inhumanity is clear; their ideologies are bankrupt. No grievance or cause can justify such violence. Those who claim to be acting in the name of religion are only harming their religion. Terrorism is a threat to all humankind. As we have seen over the years with grim regularity, no country, and no city, nobody is immune."
