CHP to continue uncompromising opposition attitude

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), which is faced with internal conflict over the demand for an extraordinary congress following the results of the Nov. 1 elections, has finalized its policies and strategies in Parliament for the new legislative year while preparing for the ordinary party congress on Jan 16-17. During the previous legislative term, the CHP experienced frequent intra-party turmoil between feuding neo-nationalists and modernists. The party aims to be stricter in the 26th legislative term with the party planning to impose martial law on its deputies during the new term. The CHP, which has finalized its policies on the Constitution and bylaws for the upcoming period, will not compromise on its stance regarding a presidential system and the previously mentioned four-item red lines. Additionally, the party will also not allow modifications to the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey's (TBMM) bylaws regarding "reducing the oppositions' affect in Parliament."

The most important item on the agenda of the 26th legislative year is the Constitution. The party aims to prioritize modifications on 60 articles that were agreed on in the previous term. The CHP describes the first four articles of the Constitution as "red-lines," with the main opposition party shutting its doors on a potential presidential system. The CHP is expected oppose alterations to Parliament's bylaws. In regards to the modification of Parliament bylaws, which indicates "lowering the affect and voice of the opposition under the roof of Parliament," the CHP will strongly oppose it, like it did in the previous term. Democracy, human rights and violations of rights related to freedoms once again top the agenda of the CHP.
