Poll: Voters think CHP turning into an Alevi party

As intra-party tensions have increased in the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), the latest poll results prepared from interviews with CHP voters found that half of the participant think the CHP has turned into an Alevi party with the removal of fundamental political principles.

The recently conducted public survey by the Ankara-based Objective Research Center (ORC) and MAK Consultancy found 53.5 percent of participants think that the CHP is abandoning its fundamental principles and turning into an Alevi party, representing a religious minority in Turkey. Meanwhile, more than 90 percent of the responders said that the CHP's disregarding its fundamental values disturbs them. The survey also showed that 96.5 percent of participants disapproved of CHP deputies attending PKK funerals and 85.8 percent said the attitude of CHP deputies opposing the government's intervention against the Gülen Movement is distressing.

In addition, the poll results found that the majority of CHP voters disagree with the support CHP deputies showed the academicians who signed the petition from the Academics for Peace. While 63 percent of those interviewed disapproved, 37 percent indicated that they were in favor of the support given to the academics. Support from CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to the Syrian regime was described as wrong by 61.7 of the participants, while the Turkish government's aid to Syrian refugees in Turkey gained support from 74.9 percent of CHP voters who took part in the poll.

If there were to be an election today, 64 percent of participants said the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) would again take control of the government with a majority. In addition, 92 percent would not support a possible coalition between the CHP and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Also, 44 percent of participants think that the administration of former CHP Chairman Deniz Baykal was more successful than today's administration with Kılıçdaroğlu.
