New political party needed, 61.5 pct of HDP voters say
The Optimar research company recently conducted a survey on Turkey's political agenda and found that 61.5 percent of respondents who are Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voters want a new political party. The survey was conducted in the last week of May with 1,508 participants in 26 provinces.
The head of Optimar, political communication expert Hilmi Daşdemir, commenting on the survey results, said: "In response to the question: ‘Should there be a new political party,' 44 percent of respondents said yes, 47.8 percent said no, 6.4 percent said, ‘no opinion' and 1.7 percent indicated ‘not applicable.' "
When broken down by respondents' party preference, 61.5 percent of HDP voters supported the idea of a new party's establishment, 54.7 percent of Republican People's Party (CHP) voters, 43.3 percent of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) voters and 24.9 percent of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) voters.
The survey results show that 49 percent of respondents support switching from the current parliamentary system to a presidential regime and 41 percent oppose the change. Additionally, survey participants were in favor of switching to a presidential system with support rising from 49 percent to 51 percent.
Regarding government's counter-terrorism initiatives, more than 59.9percent of participants responded in favor of the policies and 65.8 percent are not in favor of another reconciliation process. The result also shows that 73.6 percent of respondents are in favor of lifting parliamentary immunity.
Daşdemir added: "Fifty-one percent of participants chose the AK Party when asked who they would vote for in the event of a general election today."
