Survey: CHP increasingly losing support in its strongholds
The results of a recent survey conducted by Ankara's Objective Research Center (ORC) revealed on Tuesday that the Republican People's Party (CHP) is losing votes in İzmir, the stronghold of the main opposition CHP. The survey was conducted from June 19-25 with 8,250 participants in five metropolises located on the coast of the Aegean Sea. The survey results show that the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is the only political party that increased its votes in İzmir. According to the results of Turkey's Nov. 1 elections, the CHP is at 46.8 percent in İzmir; however, the recent survey reveals that the CHP's votes decreased from 46.8 percent to 45.2 percent. Regarding the AK Party, it has raised its votes from 31 percent to 34.8 percent. Additionally, in Aydın, 40 percent of participants would vote for the CHP in the event of a general election today. However, this result shows a 0.3 percent decrease in CHP votes in Aydın. Moreover, the AK Party increased its votes by 1.4 percent in Aydın after the Nov. 1 elections, according to research.
In the province of Manisa, 46.3 percent of respondents would have voted for the AK Party in the event of a general election. Also, the result indicates a 2.3 percent increase in AK Party votes in Manisa. Meanwhile, CHP votes decreased by 1.6 percent in Manisa, according to the survey. In addition, the AK Party increased its votes by 1.6 percent in Denizli and remained the leading party in that province.
The CHP is on the skids in Muğla, also. Forty-seven percent of participants would vote for the CHP, indicating a 1 percent decrease when the Nov. 1 election was taken into consideration. Additionally, AK Party votes increased from 29.9 percent to 31.8 percent in Muğla.
According to another survey conducted between June 5 and June 12 with a total of 2,240 participants, the first survey since Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım was elected AK Party chairman and the prime minister, showed a significant increase of support for the AK Party from the participants at 53.5 percent. The party received 49.5 percent of votes in the Nov. 1 elections. Support for the CHP is at 23.6 percent, and at 12 percent for the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), while if an election was held, the pro-PKK Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) would fall under the electoral threshold with only 6.9 percent support.
Regarding the presidential system debates, 58.4 percent of participants supported a switch to a presidential system in another survey from the same company in May and 56.1 percent in February. The latest figures show that switching to a presidential system is also favorable for different parties. A total of 87.5 percent of participants think that the AK Party would possibly win the general elections, while 79 percent of them declared their support for security operations against the PKK terrorist organization.
