President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had announced shortly after the botched Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) coup attempt on July 15 that the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) would be swiftly restructured. Now Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said late on Wednesday that the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) will also be restructured and domestic intelligence will be handed to a separate unit and foreign intelligence will be under the MİT.Explaining that the MİT monitors intelligence sharing between the police, gendarmerie and other institutions, Yıldırım said: "Today's need is to compile all domestic intelligence under one roof. Foreign intelligence is to continue to be compiled under the MİT." Commenting on the alleged affiliation between the PKK and FETÖ, Yıldırım claimed "there are clear signs of an affiliation between FETÖ and the PKK," and that the affiliation is "no secret" and has been revealed in intelligence reports.With efforts to prevent another coup attempt, Yıldırım said that similar restructuring of intelligence units could also be established within the TSK, which would conduct background checks on current and prospective personnel. "There may also be an intelligence unit established for the military itself to conduct investigations into personnel. This means conducting background checks on personnel to investigate whether they have any affiliation to a group or any other structure prior to accepting personnel, promoting or moving to another duty. It has been 40 years and people close to the chief of General Staff, commanders of the TSK attempted a coup," Yıldırım said.
