People arrested for terror, not journalism: FM

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said that there are no journalists currently in custody in Turkey for simply doing their jobs and writing stories, speaking during his visit to Spain last week, when Çavuşoğlu gave an interview to Spanish newspapers telling reporters that the journalists who have been arrested in Turkey had direct or indirect ties to terrorist organizations. In response to a question about freedom of the press, the foreign minister said, "There is currently not even one journalist who is in custody in Turkey for writing news stories. If there is one, I would like to know who he/she is," Anadolu Agency (AA) reported. "Those who revealed themselves to be journalists have either supported terrorism or terrorist organizations," he stated."So many people have been arrested [in Turkey] because they actively supported the [July 15] coup attempt and some people used the media as a propaganda tool," he added. Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also criticized Reporters Without Borders (RSF) for their biased reports about the freedom of the press in Turkey.
