Germany looks for alternatives to air base in Turkey, report claims

After a written query by the German Left Party, the country's government has confirmed that its military has a list of alternatives to Turkey's İncirlik Air Base, as claimed in a report by German daily Die Welt.

"An investigation to find alternative sites has shown that, from a military point of view, there were basically quite a few locations spread across Jordan, Kuwait and Cyprus," the news article contended.

According to the daily, there were reportedly three bases in Jordan and Kuwait as well as two bases in Greek Cyprus.

However, Jan Van Aken, foreign policy spokesperson for the Left Party told Die Welt that the German government has no intention of withdrawing troops and fighter jets from the İncirlik Air Base, without holding a meeting with the authorities in the aforementioned countries.

Last year, Ankara and Berlin exchanged words over German lawmakers' requests to visit the air base. Even though, the Turkish government initially rejected the idea, German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, later visited German troops in June 2016.

Meanwhile, amid tensions with the U.S., regarding a lack of support by the anti-Daesh coalition to Turkey's battle against Daesh in Syria, the Turkish government has considered shutting down İncirlik all together.

Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalın in January said that Turkey had the right to shut down İncirlik.

The air base is currently used by the U.S.-led coalition to fight Daesh in the Middle East. Apart from U.S., and German Tornado jets, the British Air Force and the Royal Saudi Air Force also use the base.
