Armed forces to investigate CHP leader's visit to military base

The Presidency of the General Staff made a written statement on Friday, regarding the Republican People's Party (CHP) leader's welcoming with a military ceremony during his visit to Balıkesir, a city in the Marmara region of western Turkey.

"The subject that is related to the visit of the main opposition party's chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to the 6th Main Jet Base command on April 13 is being investigated."

CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu started his visit to Balıkesir on Thursday from Bandırma, a district in Balıkesir. The private airplane carrying Kılıcdaroğlu landed at the Bandırma 6th Main Jet Base, which is being used for civil flights as well.

After the escort of honor greeted him with a salute, Kılıçdaroğlu visited the base commander and the pictures of the ceremony were shared from the Facebook account of the mayor of Bandırma Dursun Mirza.

Some Justice and Development Party (AK Party) supporters asserted that the CHP leader violated the pre-election restrictions by visiting the base. Some of them even claimed that it was a "tribute to the coup."

The military sources also said it was not appropriate for Kılıçdaroğlu to be welcomed with a military ceremony.

"The main opposition party leader is on the fourth line of the state protocol. There shouldn't be any welcoming with the escort of honor. During the pre-election restrictions period, only the president is welcomed with the military ceremony."
