The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) convened its Party Assembly meeting to determine a new political strategy after the April 16 referendum, where some party members demanded an extraordinary congress to elect senior executives of the CHP. Following the Party Assembly, the CHP held a meeting of the Central Executive Committee (MYK) on Wednesday.

According to sources, the results of the referendum and the strategy to be followed by party executives were evaluated during the CHP's Party Assembly meeting. The meeting was closed-door and lasted more than seven hours. During the meeting, the CHP indicated it would likely continue to object to the results of the referendum on legal grounds. Some deputy chairmen were criticized, saying that they are "insufficient" in their own fields. On that note, Party Assembly members requested to renew the MYK by electing its members including 12 deputy chairmen and the general secretary of the CHP.

In this context, some party members demanded an extraordinary congress be held to elect executives of the party. Those who supported the idea of an extraordinary congress said, "An extraordinary congress will refresh confidence in the CHP." According to sources, CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu did not lean towards the idea to organize an extraordinary congress before 2018. In response, some members said that if an extraordinary congress could not be held before the usual date, there should be a congress for a program or regulation. Kılıçdaroğlu said such a congress for regulation could be organized if it is necessary for the party. After the party assembly meeting, the CHP revealed a declaration.

Meanwhile, CHP spokesperson said yesterday that they will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to challenge the acceptance of unstamped ballots in the April 16 referendum. "I want to reiterate once again that we will take the referendum result to the ECHR," Spokeswoman Selin Sayek Böke told reporters in Ankara.
