AK Party leaders look to surveys, election results amid re-organization efforts

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) reportedly will take three criterion into consideration while renovating the party's positions and organizations.

According to Turkish daily Milliyet, the party will evaluate the April 16 referendum results by comparing it with the most recent general election results in concert with regional opinion leaders and surveys to measure the satisfaction of citizens.

While opinions regarding the reconstruction of the party came up in the Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK) meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan following his return to the AK Party, the president has chosen not to implement an extensive shuffle just yet. However, it was reported that certain reports and opinions were behind the president's remarks of exhaustion in the party, and an extensive reshuffle is likely in June.

Party sources suggested the referendum results can be considered an alarm signal for upcoming municipal elections and drew attention to insufficient efforts of party organizers to integrate with the public during the referendum campaign. For that reason, comparison between the April 16 results and most recent general election is expected to be the first criteria for renovation.

After that, the party is likely to look to opinion leaders, former or incumbent deputies in each region, while reshaping operations of local councils and local party organizations. There are reportedly numerous complaints in many regions, as the activities of the organizations were confined to distributing leaflets.Eventually, the AK Party will conduct surveys to measure voter sentiment. According to their results, the party will take necessary steps to reshape local organizations.

Meanwhile, Erdoğan ordered the AK Party administration to closely monitor municipalities, ordering the application of the reform model that he applied to the Istanbul Municipality as mayor in 1994 to municipalities. The AK Party will initially request a detailed report from mayors of AK Party municipalities and then will create report cards for municipalities according to whether or not they have fulfilled their election pledges.
