Turkish people living in the U.S. launched a petition on June 21 on the White House's official website in favor of Fetullah Gülen's extradition to Turkey.

According to the statement of the petition, the July 15 coup attempt was addressed, focusing on what happened that night and the fact that the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) was behind the coup attempt.

The petition has gotten 13,399 signatures so far. Reiterating that 249 people were killed and 2,195 others were wounded that night, the petition indicates that, "On that night, every part of Turkish society defended democracy and [repelled] the coup attempt. It was a historical moment for Turkey."

The statement emphasized that since July 15, Turks in the U.S. have worked for the extradition of Gülen, who is the leader of FETÖ.

"We believe that the U.S. will extradite Gülen to Turkey as soon as possible in order to obtund the sufferings of the wounded and those who lost their lives at that night," the statement added.

FETÖ and its U.S.-based leader Gülen is believed to have orchestrated the defeated coup on July 15, 2016, which left 249 people dead and nearly 2,200 injured.

The cult is accused of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.

Ankara has sought Gülen's extradition to Turkey, where he faces charges, but has been frustrated with the pace of Washington's processing of the request, despite an existing treaty between the two NATO allies.
